Niche: A Pretty Urban Garden Shop in Boston

In the midst of a Boston snowstorm, stepping into urban gardening oasis Niche on Tremont Street in the South End was somewhat otherworldly and a very welcome respite from the cold.

And while I sadly couldn’t buy any flowers since I was scheduled to fly back to London the next day, it was one of my favourite discoveries of the city on my last trip.

Being a city dweller, I love the concept of urban gardening, of bringing plants and flowers into our lives despite not having the space outdoors. I grew up always having a garden at home that was bursting with blossoms and veggies. I was thrilled when we recently moved offices and I found myself with a window near my desk for the first time in two years. I immediately brought in some greenery. Plus, Jorge being a garden designer and working for a nursery means our house is full of potted plants.

Niche runs workshops in terrarium design (and aeriums – they sell a lot of low-maintenance air plants), putting together succulent windowsill boxes or piecing together fern wreaths. The shop reminded me of the lovely Katie from Art Farm who I think would enjoy a visit (although she’s not in Boston either, sadly!).

It’s a tiny little place, friendly and welcoming. There’s plenty to look at though. I bought Jorge a silver spritzer, myself some garden thread for my new project (un-related to gardening, mostly) and my mom picked up some packets of Greek oregano seeds with a pretty packaging design for my dad to grow.

There are tropical plants, bonsai trees, a great array of herbs and everything you need to pot them. It was just a pretty place to be and smelled like Spring. Walking into a flower shop in the middle of a bitter cold Winter afternoon? One of life’s little luxuries for sure.

Niche has a beautiful Instagram page too.

An inspiration. My forlorn cactus is a pathetically lonely figure and will soon be joined with other green phenomena thanks to your example!

Excellent. My desk needs some more greenery too. I think we should create a roof garden, don’t you agree?

Me too! Stumbling on a little gem is always a highlight of a trip for me (or even just here in London). xo

What a charming and lovely space! I love all the greenery. Yes!!! I would absolutely love this place if it was in Chicago. I’ll have to seek it out if I’m ever in Boston. xoxo

I thought you would 🙂 I’m sure there’s somewhere similar you already know about in Chicago though! xo
